Tri State Returns from Northwood Prep Invitational 2-1-0
Taking a break from league play, Tri State's Empire Jr B team traveled to Lake Placid, NY over the weekend to participate in the 28th Annual Northwood Prep Invitational. The weekend began with a solid 1-0 win over the Boston Advantage(who would later advance to the semi-finals). Goaltender Anthony Deangelis '89 made 29 saves to record his second shutout of the season.
On Day 2 Tri State faced off against the NJ Titans and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. The game was back and forth in the second half but the Selects were unable to capitalize on key power play opportunities leading to a 3-2 final despite outplaying and outshooting their opponent.
In the nightcap the Selects would have to beat Northwood Prep and give up less than 3 goals in the process to win a 3 team tiebreaker and advance to the tournament semifinals. 8 minutes into the game Tri State had jumped out to a 3-0 advantage, getting two early goals from Joe Zitarelli '88 and a power play goal from Igor Skenderija '87.
Leading 3-2 at the half Tri State would have to shut out Northwood over the final 25 minutes to advance. Things looked good as the Selects led 4-2 with just over 5 minutes to play but a late PP tally for Northwood ousted the Selects from the playoffs and Boston advanced.
Overall however, it was a positive experience for the club and coach Anderson feels the team made some noticeable progress. "I am very pleased with the way we responded last night v. Northwood. They're a quality opponent and we jumped on them right away. I thought that showed alot of charachter given our poor effort vs. the Titans. I think we learned a valuable lesson on why it's so important to play this game with passion each and every night out. We blocked more shots last night then we did all year. We're getting consistency from our goaltending position, our defenseman are more accountable now and we even scored a power play goal for once! Miracles really do happen in Lake Placid!.
I'm excited to see our hockey club continue to get better. We're taking it one game at a time and we have another great opportunity ahead of us this weekend in Bridgewater".
