BRUINS SWEEP CD; STAY ON TOP
Team Defense Leading B's
MARLBORO, MA-On Saturday night, as the teams close on the Bruins heels to win the regular season title were stumbling, the B's defense made an early Justin Mansfield goal stick to beat the CD Selects at NESC. The next day the B's continued their strong defensive play with a 3-1 win to sweep the CD Selects.
Earlier in the day the Tri-State Selects and Jersey Wildcats beat the second and third place Pittsburgh Jr. Pens and Maksymum, respectively, to give the Bruins a little more breathing room at the top of the standings. The Bruins now have a 4.5 game lead on second place Maksymum.
Goalie Clay Witt, already with the second best GAA in the league, lowered his numbers and is starting to play his best hockey at just the right time. Witt, a '91 birth year from Brandon, FL, is in his second season with the B's and is establishing himself as an elite level goalie.
As is the Bruins defense which now has a team GAA of 1.78, best in the league. "Team defense is, ultimately, what will lead us down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs," coach Chris Masters commented. "It is something that we start working on the very first day of training camp and the players have done a greta job of understanding our system and then executing it. Our defensemen have done a great job of transitioning the puck to our forwards and then heading up ice. We stress not giving other teams second and third chances in our own end by not executing on the breakout and the players have done a great job with that. It will need to continue."
There was no let up for the Bruins on Sunday morning as their stingy defense again got the job done yielding just one goal in a 3-1 win over the CD Selects. The win was the teams 29th (league play) and they stay atop the Empire Jr. Hockey League.
The B's got goals from Danny Szerlip, Cody Learned and Logan Romano and another solid game in the pipes from Clay Witt.
The team now looks to a home and home series with the Bridgewater Bandits.
