Stars Empire season at the critical point
The Buffalo Stars Empire Junior B team find themselves at the critical point in the season as they prepare for their final 9 games with their eye on the final playoff spot in the American Conference.
Buffalo with a league record of 12-15-8 find themselves fighting to hang on to the 6th and final playoff position. With Brewster just 2 points behind, the Stars are in must win situations going into the final 3 weeks of play.
This weekend’s match up is huge in more ways than one. Buffalo travels to Long Island to take on the always tough Applecore Junior team. AC is in 3rd place in the Conference which gives them home ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs. If the standings were to close today, Buffalo would travel back to Long Island for the first round.
After having lost 4 in a row, AC has rebounded strong and won their last 3 games to keep pace over 4th place Jersey. Applecore is looking to hang on to 3rd place for the all important home ice advantage. Buffalo, with a 2 game played advantage over Brewster needs to go into Long Island and come away with at least 2 points. The remaining schedule is clearly in Brewster’s favor but Buffalo can still control their own destiny. With 3 games in hand over the struggling Syracuse Stars, Buffalo still has an opportunity to move ahead of them and secure a 5th place position. The bottom line for Buffalo is to continue to compete and get points.
The last time Buffalo and Applecore met, each team skated away with a win. Applecore plays a very explosive run and gun style offense. They have popped in 163 goals but have allowed 116. The Stars with their defensive style of play have allowed only 108 against but have scored a conference low 87 goals for.
Players to look out for this weekend are Applecore’s Frank Posillico (20g/22a) and Tim Baxter (16g/21a) and Buffalo’s Patrick Conte (25 pts) and Ryan Cunningham (23 pts). The magic number for Buffalo is 16 with any combination of Buffalo gaining or Brewster losing 16 points.
