Stu Irving Named Head Coach of the Valley Junior Warriors Junior B Team

20-Year Merrimack College Assistant Coach Veteran Takes Over the Empire Hockey League Power.

The Valley Junior Warriors have added more firepower to its coaching staff by naming former Merrimack College assistant and Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Stu Irving as head coach of the Valley Junior Warriors Junior B Team.

Irving, a former professional and Olympic hockey player, spent 20 years at Merrimack College. He joins an already impressive list of Valley Junior Warrior coaches that includes former Boston Bruins players Bob Carpenter and Bob Sweeney.

“There is no question that Stu is going to help lift our Junior B program to the next level,” said Andy Heinze, head coach and general manager of the Valley Junior Warriors A team. “His experience in recruiting and developing players is second to none and we are fortunate to have him join our team.”

While at Merrimack College, Irving was responsible for scouting and recruiting players as well as off-ice conditioning and on-ice coaching. He was part of a Merrimack program that captured three straight ECAC East crowns and earned a berth into the second round of the NCAA Division 1 Tournament. As a player, Irving captured a silver medal at the Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan in 1972 before signing his first professional contract with the Minnesota North Stars. After spending 11 years in the minor leagues, Irving announced his retirement in 1982 and embarked on a successful coaching career.

In addition to his hockey duties at Merrimack, Irving worked as the College’s men’s golf coach, serving in that position from 1984 to 1989 and returning to that post in 1993. He guided the Warriors to a victory at the Bowdoin Invitational and second place finishes at the Franklin Pierce and Northeast-10 Invitationals. An avid runner, golfer and tennis player, Irving ran his first Boston Marathon in 1988 and was one of four Merrimack coaches to participate in the 1991 Marathon.

Irving takes over for Tim Pelletier, who has joined Heinze and his Valley Junior Warriors Junior A coaching staff. The Valley Junior Warriors B Team competes in the Empire Hockey League.
