Buffalo Jr. Stars
December 20, 2007
Buffalo Stars complete successful weekend on and off the ice.
It was Community Appreciation Weekend as the Buffalo Stars Junior B and C teams were at home facing off against league opponents.
In CHA Junior C, the offensively explosive Buffalo Stars took on a struggling Virginia Express team. The games were not really close as Buffalo dominated both games and skated away with a 9-4 win on Saturday and an 11-3 victory on Sunday. Anthony DiChristopher led the weekend for the Stars with 3 goals and 4 assists. Russ Rizzo added 3 and 3 while Joey Rohm, Fred House and Christopher Kinney chipped in with 5 points each. The Stars were without the services of Sean Cirbus who was called up to the B team for the weekend.
The Stars maintain their hold on 2nd place with a record of 17-6-2. Their next two weeks are extremely critical as the team takes to the road and tangles with 1st place East Coast Eagles. The following weekend the Stars begin the New Year hosting 3rd place Pittsburgh. The Junior Pens are breathing down the throat of the Stars. Trailing Buffalo by only 5 points, but with 4 games in hand, the Pens are poised to overtake Buffalo in the Standings. Buffalo will have their hands full as the next 4 games could very well determine the season for the Stars.
In Empire Junior B action, the Buffalo Stars hosted the Empire League leader Pittsburgh Amateur Penguins. The Pens are strong, fast skating team and their record reflects their excellent play. They handled the Buffalo Stars this past skating off with 4-1 and 4-2 victories. Buffalo did however receive solid goaltending from David Weinstein and Andy Olsen. Sean Cirbus on loan from the Junior C team scored in his first Empire game. Other Buffalo scores on the weekend came off the stick of Ryan Cunningham and Sean Rogan. The Stars fall to 5th in the American Conference but maintain a one point lead over Syracuse in the division. Syracuse has 2 games in hand on Buffalo. Buffalo drops to 9-11-8 in league play and is 13-12-8 overall.
Both teams have the weekend off and will prepare for a big post Christmas week of action. The B team will participate in the Canisius College Showcase December 27-29 and face off against the CD Selects Empire Team; NJ Rockets MET Team and Michigan Ice Dogs CSHL Team. The Stars C team travels to North Carolina on December 28-30 to take on the 1st Place East Coast Eagles.
The Stars want to thank the community for their generous support of our Annual Food Drive. In spite of the weather, the Stars and Hornets were able to collect over 1500 lbs of food for the Food Bank of WNY. The weekend long event was filled with fun and hospitality and of course a visit by Santa and capped off with an open Family Skating Party. Thanks to all the volunteers who made the weekend outstanding.
