Hewson gets NHL experience.
Taylor Hewson of the Virginia Statesmen got a taste of hockey at the highest
level last week when the Washington Capitals rewarded veteran goalie Olie
Kolzig with a much deserved day off from practice. The team needed another
goalie to skate with Brent Johnson and Hewson was asked if he could fill
in. "I was really nervous before I got there, but the guys were really
cool and once I got onto the ice I was able to get my nerves under control"
noted the Canadian goaltender who has started all but three games for the
Statesmen since arriving to Virginia in early October. Taylor did not look
out of place on the ice with the NHLers making saves on super stars such
as Alexander Semin and Alexander Ovechkin. "Some of those guys can
really shoot the puck" commented Hewson "..and they can pick
the corners very well" he added.
The Capitals coaching staff and players were impressed with Hewson's ability
and character as they have indicated that he will be invited out again
on different occasions throughout the year.
For the past two seasons Taylor Hewson has tended goal for the Linsday
Muskies of Ontario Provincial Junior 'A' Hockey League but it wasn't until
this season once he was traded to the Virginia Statesmen of the Empire
Junior Hockey League that his career has begun to flourish. Hewson's play
between the pipes has garnered a lot of attention from collegiate scouts."He
has saved us on several occasions this season, the guys really rally around
him" noted Statesmen head coach Derek Comeau. Standing at 6'4, Taylor
takes up a lot of net while his agility skills allow him to be counted
on to make crucial saves. "He has a tremendous level of talent, there
is no question that the scouts will continue to flock towards him"
commented Statesmen goalie coach Darren Hersh. So far Hewson has received
interest from several NCAA schools, but now that he is getting the chance
to skate with the Capitals, more opportunities may be around the corner.

Taylor Hewson makes a big save on NHL super star Alex Ovechkin.
